Newgate Prison
In Great Expectations, Newgate Prison is where Wemmick shows Pip around. Pip is surprised by how friendly the convicts are to Pip and how they treated Wemmick with kindness, even on their execution day. The prison was used for 200 years, although it was demolished and renovated many times during those years. Newgate Prison was an old-style prison, whenever a convict was to be executed, they would perform the execution out in front of the prison for the public to see. The gallows would have a crowd of people watching every week waiting for the infamous convicts to be executed. For the last time, the prison was demolished in 1904, but on the site of the prison, The Central Criminal Court is located. They have different artifacts and parts of the prison located in different exhibitions and places throughout London. There is a part of a cell located in St. Peter's Church in London. It surprised me that the convicts were so friendly to Wemmick in the book, I wonder if that is total fiction, or if the convicts actually showed kindness towards their guards.
